Utrasonic non-destructive testing gas cylinders


ISO 11363-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 58, Gas cylinders, Subcommittee SC 2, Cylinder fittings. This first edition of ISO 11363-1 cancels and replaces ISO 10920:1997 and ISO 11116-1:1999.


1、The operation of the ultrasonic examination equipment shall be by qualified and experienced personnel certified at least to Level 1 and supervised by personnel certified at least to Level 2 in accordance with ISO 9712. 

2、The inner and outer surfaces of any cylinder, which is to be examined ultrasonically, shall be in a condition suitable for an accurate and reproducible examination.

3、Other standards, which meet or exceed these minimum requirements, may be used subject to approval by the inspector.

Tips for safe use of gas cylinders:

Cylinder heat treatment

ISO 4705 provides for coolant and tempering temperature. 

These two issues are closely related to the chemical composition of materials. Coolant includes air, oil, water, salt and so on. European countries agreed to water quenching;

The United States does not agree to water quenching of chromium molybdenum steel; ISO 4705 basically disapproves of water-quenching, which imposes several conditions.

When high-pressure gas cylinders are quenched, they cannot be completely quenched because they contain a lot of hot air inside, and the cooling rates of the inner and outer walls are also different.

ISO specifies the minimum tempering temperature, and the heat treatment method and coolant are specified in GB 5099-85.

(1) Lighting equipment in the warehouse storing combustible and explosive gas cylinders must be explosion-proof, electrical switches and fuses should be set outside the warehouse, and lightning protection devices should be set at the same time.

(2) Gas cylinders containing toxic gases, or those containing media that can cause combustion and explosion after contact with each other, shall be stored in separate compartments, and gas or fire extinguishing equipment shall be provided nearby.

The ultrasonic testing instrument used for tempering and tempering cylinders should at least have the functions of longitudinal and transverse detection of inner surface, longitudinal and transverse detection of outer surface and wall thickness determination, and meet the requirements of product standards;

If the bottle thread needs non-destructive testing on its surface, a magnetic powder testing instrument shall be provided for the inner surface of the bottle.
